The Sun Cycle of Ra

Ra was the sun god. From reading this blog, I think you can tell that by now. Anyway he rode his sun chariot across the sky during the day, and then figuritively died at the sunset. He journied into the underworld, and fought the cosmic serpent Apep and his children. Anyway, at dawn he came back to the earth and before he rode his sun chariot across the sky, he was the sacred beetle or scarab, Khepri. Weird sun cycle huh?

Atum/ Ra and his "sons" (Pharohs)

Ra was an all powerful god of Egypt. He was so powerful, that the Pharohs of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, considered themselves minor gods, or sons of the head god Ra. Stupid right? WRONG!!! They weren't actually minor gods, or sons of Ra, but the other Egyptians in the land, under the Pharohs, believed that the Pharohs were sons of Ra. Huh? I asked myself how would they belive that and they were very religious people. They had gods for everything: god of the brick on the 32 pyramid on the second level, left side; they had gods for special tigers, they had gods for ANYTHING. Chicken wings, dogs, ancient Dr. Pepper.

Let's Talk About Ra's creation...

Ra/Atum or Atum/Ra. Does it make a difference? It's hard writing a blog with two or three different names as your topic. Anyway, a question I asked at the start of this project was who created Ra? I thought Ra creted everything in the Egyptian religion. Guess not. Ra/Atum was created by the sea god Nun, and Nun was the whole earth. Before Atum/Ra Nun was just an ocean that covered the earth.

And out of the ocean sprouted a mound of sand called Ben-Ben, and out of Ben-Ben came Atum/Ra. Great...awsome...no one cares about a falcon-headed man coming out of a sand mound.

Atums Appearence

Ra was a very "bird looking" god. Maybe the reason is that HIS HEADS A FALCON!!! Yeah, his heads a falcon and his body is that of a man. Wierd. Yeah! Well, he only looked that way after dawn and the moment before night when he traveled into the underworld. Well, at dawn he was the sacred beetle or scarab called Khepri. (How many names does this guy have?!) Then somehow he changed into his falcon-man form. But When he trveld into the underworld to fight the cosmic serpent Apep and his childern. The Egyptians would pray before sunset that Ra would have a safe journey in the underworld and would rise again the next morning. Well of course he'll rise the next morning. He's the SUN GOD!!! AND quite frankly, the sun will always "rise" figuritively. The sun is always there, it never sets or rises. What was wrong with these Egyptians?

Atum/Ra: the Greatest God?

Atum/Ra: the sun god. The Egyptian Gods were created by this god, Atum or Ra. Either name fits. Well, Atum (I'll just call him Atum for now) he created all of the gods: Shu, and Tefnut, then they had kids, Geb and Nut, and so on... Anyway he could be considered the "creator" of all teh Egyptian Gods. But some would argue. He rose out of the mound of sand, from the ocean god Nun. Some could argue that Nun was the "creator of the creator." But really, Nun wasn't signifacant in any way, shape, or form except for creating the god Atum. Atum is a very important god, not for jsut creating the other gods, and starting the line of others, he was important also because he rdoe in the sun chariot and brought light. He was looked upon as "the god" he carried the sun. That's kind of important. "Oh look we have no light hooray!" What? Who says that. He's a very signifacant god in the Egyptian religion. Go Atum. Keep carrying that sun!!!
